- Focus on personal narrative, SIFT, irony, characterization, foreshadowing, allusion
Vocabulary Words: #s 61-71 (formica, debut, prelude, staccato, spinet, tutus, disaster, sentimental, curtsy, conspire, betrayal, devastate, discordant, fiasco, indignity, lament, prodigy, ream, reproach, reverie, conspire)
HOMEWORK: Vocabulary – Every Thursday
Grammar assignments, due: Wednesday
Sentences, due: Thursday along with the other 10 vocabulary words

Activities
Monday
1. Quiz #4- “The Scarlet Ibis”, parts of a sentence, vocabulary
2. Read “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan.
3. Distribute grammar and vocabulary homework.

Tuesday
1. Reading check.
2. Close reading: character, characterization, conflict, allusion, theme, simile, plot elements/ SOAPSTONE + T
3. Discuss.

Wednesday
1. Discuss grammar concept: more parts of speech (verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) and sentence.
2. Work on exercises.

Thursday
1. Discuss grammar homework.
2. Write sentences on strips.

Friday
1. Write a diary entry in which the mother explains her hopes, dreams, and expectations for her daughter, as well as her sense of frustration.
2. Review for Monday’s quiz.

  13. mrs. terry i had a question about the assertions on the passage you assigned for hw.

  14. What is the question, Chris? The assertion is basically what you have understood about the character according to the clues to his/her personality. Use the dialogue, or the direct comments of the author or narrator to write the assertion. Say for instance, according to parts of the dialogue you can assert that:

    The narrator is obedient because....

    After the "because" part, you have to provide support for your assertion. The evidence should be text-based.
